Sealants

Sealants are a resin based or glass ionomer material that are placed on the pits and fissures of posterior teeth in order to prevent cavities in susceptible teeth.

Posterior teeth, especially ones with deep anatomy, are more prone to get cavities due to the higher chance of food getting caught and difficulty cleaning the area, which then creates an environment that is susceptible to bacterial growth.

Sealants block bacterial entry into these areas through phsyical means.  Placing sealants are quick and painless.  No anesthesia is required.  The basic process consists of cleaning the teeth, drying the area, etching the tooth surface, applying the bonding agent and then using a special blue light to cure the material.
